Newark, Del. - Gabriela Marginean scored 12 of Drexel's 18 second-half points and came just two rebounds short of her sixth double-double of the season. But it was not enough to hold off an emotionally charged Delaware (24-4, 15-2 CAA) team on Senior Day at the Bob Carpenter Center as Drexel (8-20, 3-14 CAA) fell to its regional rival 64-36.
Seniors Tyresa Smith and Alena Koshansky combined for 33 points in their last regular-season home game at Delaware. Transfer guard Kyle DeHaven added 16 points and five steals for the Hens, who poached 14 passes and converted them for 17 points off turnovers.
Delaware used three early Drexel turnovers to open up with a 10-0 run and Delaware never looked back for the duration of the game. The Dragons' first field goal came on a three-pointer by Narissa Suber at the 12"05 mark in the first half. Two minutes later, Marginean, fresh off a record-setting 47-point game, hit a jumper to make it a 26-8 game, but the 18-point margin would be as close as the Dragons would get in the contest.
In the second half Drexel put up a defensive stand against the Blue Hens and held the home team without a field goal for the first six minutes and 50 seconds of the period. But the Dragons found it difficult to get their shots to fall during this stretch as well and were only able to trim the lead to 40-22. Marginean scored 12 points in the half but the only other Dragons to find the net were Anora Suber and Kelly Golden who each hit a three-pointer in the final stanza.
The victory was Delaware's 15th straight home win and 18th straight over Drexel. The Blue Hens shot an icy 28 percent from the floor in the second half, but Drexel finished the game shooting 25 percent from the floor and hit just four of its 24 three-point attempts.
Marginean's performances this week has her positioned as the second most prolific freshman scorer in the program's history. She has also amassed the fourth most rebounds ever by a Drexel freshman. Narissa Suber has already reset her own single-season record for three-pointers attempted and she is approaching her record for three-pointers made which she set at 87 last season.
The Dragons return to the DAC for their final game of the season. Senior Kira Karlstrom will be honored as part of Senior Night ceremonies prior to the 7:00 tip.
